It’s milk chocolate day, which means it’s time for another recipe! To celebrate the occasion I’ve decided to share my super simple and deliciously creamy homemade chocolate milk recipe. That’s perfect both hot and cold, so you can enjoy it year-round!
Because what better way to celebrate than consuming some smooth luxurious chocolatey goodness?
I’ve even included ways to transform it further with different toppings and additions.
Ingredients to Make Chocolate Milk
Constructing this recipe is super simple! It has only a few ingredients and you can even jazz it up with all the toppings if you like.
Milk chocolate syrup
To make the syrup you’ll need:
- Cocoa powder: I opted for Dutch cocoa powder. But any nice rich and indulgent cocoa will also work.
- Water: Combined with cocoa to make an extra chocolatey mix before the addition of chocolate. With the addition of heat, it turns into a paste-like slurry.
- Good quality chocolate: Milk chocolate specifically because we’re celebrating it! As it’s sweet on its own it doesn’t require any extra sugar to be added either. One less thing for you to add.
As simple as that! Only three ingredients for a delicious base before all the dairy and extras get added.
The rest of the ingredients for this recipe include:
- Milk: You can use any milk of your choosing. Full fat, trim or alternative milks all work well including soy, almond or coconut, you could even use this pecan milk.
- Vanilla: Just a tiny bit to lift the ingredients and pull it all together. Opt for vanilla extract or vanilla bean paste for the best flavour enhancer.
Optional Toppings and Additions (+ Milkshake Ideas)
The greatest part about making something yourself is the fact that you can customise it! The same goes for this recipe.
Here are a few suggestions:
- Add in ice cream: for the extra creaminess and a touch more sweetness. Transform this chocolate milk into a shake. All you have to do is add your ready-made chocolate milk with 3 scoops of ice cream in a blender. Whizz up for a thick creamy shake. Add in more ice cream and you have yourself a thick shake!
- Make it cookies and cream flavoured: blend your chocolate milk with a cup of cookies aka Oreos and a few scoops of ice cream in the blender. Top with whipped cream and cookie crumbs and there you have luxurious cookies and cream shake.
- Throw in Maltesers: For a fun Malteser twist! Whizz it up with your chocolate milk and a touch of ice cream, if you so desire and there you have a fun new flavour combo.
- Add in some brownies: For the chocolate overload! To a blender add in brownie pieces with your chocolate milk and a few scoops of ice cream. Blend it up, pour it into glasses and top it with cream, extra brownie bits and even a drizzle of melted milk chocolate!
Hot or cold?
Or how about a bit of both? When heated this gives you a nice cup of warmth on a cold day and is the perfect comforting cup of happiness. Cold chocolate milk on the other hand is soothing, cooling and refreshing on a summer day. Pick and choose depending on the season, or depending on your mood.
Both have a nice thick texture and lovely rich, indulgently chocolate flavour. Just experienced it differently!
